Mercury news spoke about Gavin Newsom’s new plan to reduce single-use plastics in waterways like the creeks and rivers. This will do wonders for the plastic waste that leads to the oceans and harms all the ocean life. Banning these plastics will lead more to glass bottle usage which is a lot more environmentally stable.
Nationally, plastics usage is still as urgent of a problem as it is locally. This article from National Geographic tackles the issue from the starting point in American history. I think it is incredibly important to learn how this plastics issue came about because that is the way we can solve this problem, by going back to the roots and how Americans used to live.
Internationally, Europe decided to ban certain items like “cotton bud sticks, cutlery, plates, straws, stirrers, and sticks for balloons”. These are items that have traces of plastic that aren’t as commonly known to the public. By banning these items, people are forced to use more sustainable products which are more financially sensible.
