In honor of Earth Day this year, I attended a talk through Santa Clara University’s tUrn week. tUrn week is full of seminars and events designed to include students and faculty in environmental awareness and action. This year due to the pandemic, events were virtual, but served as a great opportunity to learn more about sustainable living and how to make the necessary lifestyle changes to become a more eco-friendly and environmentally conscious person.

The particular event that deserves to be highlighted was a unique pairing of neuroscience and sustainability. Though the topic sounds daunting, Father Roy Pereira delivers his information thoughtfully and breaks down each of his points. Pereira stresses the importance of training ourselves to develop new habits – and practice them to the point where they become natural instinct. I specifically enjoyed that he mentioned a variety of easy ways to reduce consumption and kick start those habits. Closing the talk with some religious considerations of sustainability brought the discussion full circle, even for those who don’t identify as religious.
