{"id":580,"date":"2017-01-31T11:55:39","date_gmt":"2017-01-31T11:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/dataviz\/?p=580"},"modified":"2017-02-01T07:23:47","modified_gmt":"2017-02-01T07:23:47","slug":"toulmins-argument-model-in-data-visualization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/dataviz\/2017\/01\/31\/toulmins-argument-model-in-data-visualization\/","title":{"rendered":"Toulmin\u2019s Argument Model in data visualization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today\u2019s class was a little difficult and I wanted to do some research on the concept that professor was lecturing. <strong>Toulmin,<\/strong>\u00a0an English philosopher and logician, came up with a creative idea called <a href=\"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/englishcomp2kscopexmaster\/chapter\/toulmins-argument-model\/\">Tolumin&#8217;s Argument Model<\/a>. It not only helps writers&#8217; to have better argument in writing but also benefits someone who wants to make a good visualization. He conveys his message about how a good argument should be analyzed by the model.<\/p>\n<p>In the reference 1, it shows that a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><em>claim<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>without a warrant is not a very supported claim. <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Warrant,<\/span>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>as <strong>chain of reasons<\/strong> bridges between the data and claim and answers, \u201chow did the argument get there\u201d question.<\/p>\n<p>Further in the reference 2, there is explanation about the argument model based on a hearing aid data. It clearly tells that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>qualifier<\/strong><\/em><\/span> is<strong> specification<\/strong> of data to claim and it measures the power of warrant. <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Rebuttal<\/strong><\/span>,<\/em> in another word it means a <strong>condition of exception<\/strong> to the original claim and it strengthened by warrant.
