{"id":373,"date":"2017-01-23T03:01:15","date_gmt":"2017-01-23T03:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/dataviz\/?p=373"},"modified":"2017-01-30T04:36:37","modified_gmt":"2017-01-30T04:36:37","slug":"wind-trend-around-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/dataviz\/2017\/01\/23\/wind-trend-around-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Wind Trend Around The World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/project-ukko.net\/map.html\">Project Ukko<\/a> is an interactive data visualization jointly created by EUPORIAS, Barcelona Supercomputing Center and data vis designer <a href=\"http:\/\/truth-and-beauty.net\/\">Moritz Stefaner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The project aims to create a seasonal wind prediction model that can be used in energy industry and scientific researches by analyzing and processing over 100,000 data points drawn from Euporias, a European environmental organization.<\/p>\n<p>The most prominent part in this project which I would like to discuss with you is its expressiveness and effectiveness using of mark and channels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/truth-and-beauty.net\/content\/1-projects\/25-ukko\/03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/truth-and-beauty.net\/content\/1-projects\/25-ukko\/03.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The project use thousands of rectangles, each of them is a mark to represent the dataset in a specific location in the world. There are 4 channels which encode data into the mark:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The color opacity represents how well the prediction model performed.<\/li>\n<li>The size represents the predicted wind speed.<\/li>\n<li>The color and tilt together represent predicted wind speed trend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By using these 4 type of visual channels, the project presents an aesthetic, simple yet high data-density visualization to us.
