However, the influx of poorly designed and misleading deceptive\u00a0data visualization can be dangerous and we have to be careful of the pitfalls.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c9f1\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">So what makes a deceptive\u00a0visualization to be deceptive? I am happy to share with you a blog about deceptive visualization I read recently when I tried to find some inspiration on my own project work.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>manipulation of axis orientation\/scale<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/0*DMqQKFEU_yyL2GLe.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"791\" height=\"300\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>as you can see here, the right side visualization has been\u00a0truncated in Y axis, which makes the audience has the wrong impression about the difference between X and Y.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">2. Area as Quantity (Message Exaggeration)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/0*Tkp6oEjPsZ4sxCDj.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"791\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alway be careful when you encoding quantitative data with size. If you map the data (quantity ) into the wrong way, say, use radius rather than areas, the result can be exaggerated seriously.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Inverted Axis (Message Reversal)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"3a61\" class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithSingleQuote graf-after--p\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/0*HvOGY0Mxuhc0AlQS.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"791\" height=\"313\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithSingleQuote graf-after--p\">The x and y-axis are put upside down.
