adcoms:<\/strong> admissions committee members.<\/p>\n

bump:<\/strong> a post made by the thread author, intended to move the thread to the top of the forum to generate interest.<\/p>\n

chance:<\/strong> to assess the odds of admission at a particular school, based on a set of statistics. These vary in nature, but generally include a grade point average, SAT\/ACT, extracurricular activities, hooks, and URM status.<\/p>\n

hook:<\/strong> activity or personal story which are outstanding; published research papers, service abroad, etc.<\/p>\n

lurker:<\/strong> a member who is more likely to read posts and follow threads than post or start new threads.<\/p>\n

match:<\/strong> a school at which the applicant is a pretty average admit.<\/p>\n

mod<\/strong>: forum moderator. Can delete content and ban users.<\/p>\n

reach:<\/strong> a school at which an applicant is going to be hard-pressed for admission, but not an impossibility.<\/p>\n

safety:<\/strong> a school at which an applicant is nearly guaranteed admission.<\/p>\n

stickiness:<\/strong> a term that describes the ability of a website to retain users.<\/p>\n

thread: <\/strong>a collection of posts, order chronologically, focused on a user-submitted topic.<\/p>\n

URM:<\/strong> under-represented minority. Indicates preferred status in admissions.<\/p>\n

user flags:<\/strong> a tool that allows non-moderators to call a post to the attention of moderators.<\/p>\n

virtual campus tours:<\/strong> video or slideshows of campus tours by current or prospective students, for prospective students. Typically done with a point-and-shoot camera. They sometimes differ vastly from the tours offered by the university.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
