{"id":64,"date":"2017-04-06T05:16:38","date_gmt":"2017-04-06T05:16:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/collegeandcaviar\/?p=64"},"modified":"2017-04-06T15:30:39","modified_gmt":"2017-04-06T15:30:39","slug":"the-research-process-organization-organization-organization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/collegeandcaviar\/2017\/04\/06\/the-research-process-organization-organization-organization\/","title":{"rendered":"the research process: organization.organization.organization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before reading a quite hilarious article on the most TERIBLE research account ever, I dove into my own head and mapped out my research process.<\/p>\n<p>As you\u2019ll see I believe organization of research during and before you even start is extremely important, and makes the process quicker, better, and honestly kind of fun\u2026. like a game or puzzle!<\/p>\n<p>1) creating an organized map (titles of sections, subtitles, etc) so I know exactly what I need to research<\/p>\n<p>2) having 2-5 bullet points below each section on the main points I know I want or need to find out to put in this section (this could be from background research OR, if you are a better student, questions that you want answered)<\/p>\n<p>3) starting journal research using JSTOR or Google Scholar, adding those URLs to each section\u2019s bullet points<\/p>\n<p>4) approaching each section\u2019s research individually by printing out each jounral (unless excessively long), high lighting, then including the information in each section with, of course, proper citation<\/p>\n<p>5) adding on \u2013 if after the reading there are sections I find I should include, then I add them in, this includes opposing views<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Librarians have always scared me, and honestly every librarian I meet reminds me of this lady:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_65\" style=\"width: 374px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65\" class=\"wp-image-65\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/collegeandcaviar\/files\/2017\/04\/076c4e625c335b1755e0f65145344141_84a8ddc4698140c59fcc29ab30c6e2-roz-monsters-inc-meme_245-160.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"238\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-65\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Tumblr<\/p><\/div>\n<p>BUT they are nice, and it\u2019s their job to help you, so use them!<\/p>\n<p>For now&#8230;. onto our next topic!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/xT1XGL72qSsN4iSTRu\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: WIfflegifs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I connected to Joseph Bizup\u2019s report on <em>BEAM: A Rhetorical Vocabulary for Teaching Research-Based Writing <\/em>because of his emphasis on classifying the sources you use. What\u2019s more than organizing <em>what<\/em> I need to research (content wise), but also organizing <em>what<\/em> sources I have researched (classification)?!<strong> Sounds like heaven to me!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After organizing the sources, you can map out your plan for conversation between the sources. I remember this vividly in high school teachers saying &#8220;have conversations with your sources!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Having conversations between your sources will make your piece flow\u00a0(and feel less structured and middle-school book report like!) Bizup agrees with me when he states the relationships between each of the BEAM team: \u201cIf you start with an exhibit, look for argument sources to engage; if you start with argument sources, look for exhibits to interpret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now if you ask me, I think I\u2019ve summed up how I (and you!) can use BEAM to further my research! And therefore \u201cuse these \u201cfruits\u201d effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 607px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/3o72Ffdfgr3lcGniU0\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"378\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Wifflegifs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>End Side Note: not to mention his brief moment of stress on vocabulary\u2026 I specifically related to this because I feel I was not taught vocabulary enough in middle and high school, it was either assumed you knew the word or explained to you through a very simple, and often times over-simplified and thus incorrect, way.
