Tacoma News Tribune’s “The Diner”

As a proud, lifelong Tacoman I felt the urge to bring the homework assignment home, so to say. Tacoma resident-named the “Gritty City” of Washington State and as such, the restaurant scene tends to match the cynicism of the city’s inhabitants. Depending on the neighborhood dining options typically range from greasy to sub par, but to the keen eye of a proud resident, the hidden gems are not so hidden underneath the ever-present grit. That’s where the Tacoma News Tribune’s Sue Kidd comes in.

The queen of everything food, Kidd writes a daily quick and dirty low-down on eats and drinks in Tacoma and nearby areas, The Diner.

The blog is well-kept and well-written. The posts are short enough to keep a reader interested and long enough to give each reviewee justice. The topics vary from straight reviews for specific destinations to news spots for fun events, like the food truck meet up at Cheney Stadium or not so fun events like the closing of the cult bar scene favorite, The Tempest Lounge. Overall, The Diner is a good, quick read for a Gritty Tacoman, and maybe the unlikely visitor will find something special behind the Tacoma Aroma.
