Profile of a Designer

Design culture has a historical presence and a large body of research that follows its progress. The Design Institute of Australia puts it simply, “A designer can be said to be both technician and artist.”  This definition also includes that a designer is typically the planner, but not the actual craftsperson.  For a professional designer, one who works full-time and earns her income from design work, this is typically true.  On the other hand, an amateur designer will often serve as both designer and creator.

Both an amateur or professional designer must have practical expertise about her medium, but usually has knowledge of many related mediums.  An interior designer has an understanding of furniture, textiles and fabrics, and a plethora of arts, such as painting and metal-work.  Without a basic feel for different mediums and how they interact with each other in a space, any designer will fall short of a cohesive product.
