Stepping Over Boundaries

One of the interesting and perhaps most intriguing aspect of the Savoy was that everyone was treated the same. Everyone was held to the same standards. No exceptions.  The original target audience was the blacks. The Savoy was on the black side of town and for black patrons. However, whites soon started traveling past their neighborhood boundary lines to at first watch and then actively participate.Charles Buchanan states, “We’re not partial to white people who come to gawk.. besides we’re not geared to make money out of them. They can’t spend more than the admission fee and a couple of drinks.”‘ Here no matter your race and social standing, you were treated the same. In a society that continually judged based off those two things alone, the Savoy was a breath of fresh air.
