If you continue along the right side of the river, the success of the beautification program is evident. The city usually decorates the railings above the river, as well as the two bridges that provide crossing, with flowers and lights. In addition, on one side of the river, the city has erected a few apartment buildings that take up space where previously empty dirt lots had been. Along the right side of the river, there is a stone walkway that leads towards a popular Cajun restaurant that plays jazz music during the weekends. All along this bank is a stone walkway, free of any motorized vehicles. This stone walkway, a recent addition, replaced the dirt overflow from the empty lots. The walkway continues for about a block until you reach the intersection of the river and Sierra Street. By turning right, you will see the Riverside movie theater. From there and turn left and head back up the river in order to see and enjoy the other side of the riverwalk.

As you continue along the riverwalk, you will see many of Reno’s most popular restaurants along the left bank. This addition, along with the movie theater, was part of an effort to create a family friendly environment in downtown Reno. By utilizing the space for recreation and music, the city aims to create a safe and pleasant area for families to enjoy all year round.  However, Reno’s increasing struggle with poverty is still visible to the visitors of the riverwalk, as many of Reno’s homeless prefer to talk shelter outside restaurants such as the Silver Peak Brewery. Many of the merchants, who are ironically involved with the beautification project, have complained about loitering outside their venues. These vendors need to realize that their goal of revitalizing the riverwalk includes aiding Reno’s homeless community.
