Depending on which side of the street you choose to begin the riverwalk, you will come across two different parks. It doesn’t matter which side, as both are part of the river walk. As you make your way down the hill on Arlington, you will find yourself on an overpass over the Truckee River. On the left side of the street, it is easy to see the results of the beautification project. The city of Reno, in order allow for more recreational activity within the city, rearranged several of the rocks within the river in order to create a white water rapids course for both amateur and advanced kayakers. This spot becomes very popular during the summer time. There are shallower and safer pools within the river that allow for swimmers to enjoy the water. During summertime, one of the most popular events in the downtown area is the Nevada Humane Society’s Rubber Duck Race at the Truckee River. People can “adopt” rubber ducks and enter them in a race down the river walk. Hundreds of rubber ducks are released into the river, as contestants compete for different prizes. All proceeds go towards the homeless pets and the Humane Society. These sorts of events generate a great deal of money; organizers and merchants should consider using the Riverwalk’s popularity in order to raise money to help with the local homeless community.
