{"id":1099,"date":"2020-06-22T14:52:46","date_gmt":"2020-06-22T21:52:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/arthursattic\/?p=1099"},"modified":"2026-04-21T12:26:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T19:26:32","slug":"the-nobili-papers-now-available-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/arthursattic\/2020\/06\/22\/the-nobili-papers-now-available-online\/","title":{"rendered":"The Nobili Papers &#8211; Now Available Online"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Santa Clara University Library Archives &amp; Special Collections is pleased to announce the completion of our newest digital collection, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/cdm17268.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">The Nobili Papers<\/a>.<\/em> <em>The Nobili Papers <\/em>digital collection consists of documents from Santa Clara\u2019s first president, Fr. John Nobili, who served from the college\u2019s founding in 1851 to his untimely <a href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/id\/125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">death from tetanus<\/a> in 1856. A total of 366 object records are included in the digital collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within these documents are financial records of Mission Santa Clara and Santa Clara College, legal papers, and correspondence with Church and State officials, parents, and merchants. These documents are written in a variety of languages which reflect the diversity of the Santa Clara Valley, including English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Latin. Of special interest are documents related to the Orchard Trial, in which Fr. Nobili and Bishop Alemany sought to establish claim to land formerly held by Mission Santa Clara but occupied by others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"839\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/arthursattic\/files\/2020\/06\/nobilipapers_872_full-839x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Hand written notes of Fr. Image courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/id\/874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">SCU Archives &amp; Special Collections Digital Collections<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The collection includes information regarding <a href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/search\/searchterm\/nobili%20estate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Fr. Nobili&#8217;s estate<\/a>, and how it was handled after his passing. Fr. Nobili left all of his property &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/id\/912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">of every kind<\/a>&#8221; to the President and Board of Trustees of Santa Clara College. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMy body I bequeath to the Earth from whence it sprung and my soul to God who gave it, and my memory to the Holy Catholic Church in whose commission I hope to life and die.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Fr. Nobili, Last Will and Testament<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicholas Congiato, Santa Clara College&#8217;s second president, was named as administrator of Nobili&#8217;s will. A notice of this action was placed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/id\/801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">San Jose Tribune<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other documents included in the Nobili Papers provide a peek at who early Santa Clara students were and what their lives were like. The <a href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/id\/350\/rec\/3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">School Commissioners Correspondence<\/a>, written in December of 1853, describes all pupils as being \u201cunder the age of eighteen years and over the age of four.\u201d Fr. Nobili further states that the school is open to \u201call boys, regardless of religious tenets.\u201d As of 1852, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/id\/158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">fourteen boarders and fifteen day scholars<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to paying tuition to support their studies, boarder students were required to show up with certain supplies, such as clothes and their own pillow. However, some parents seemed to view these necessities as optional&#8211;in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/id\/575\" target=\"_blank\">a draft of a letter<\/a> written by Fr. Nobili, Nobili scolds a father for abandoning his child at the school with no supplies and no tuition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student chores included sweeping the floors, cleaning out chamber pots, and making beds. All students were <a href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/id\/362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">required to attend church services<\/a> with no exceptions (although some parents were <a href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/id\/200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">not fans of this policy<\/a>). Some students wrote letters describing a pleasant life at the school and talked of <a href=\"https:\/\/content.scu.edu\/digital\/collection\/nobilipapers\/id\/381\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">studying and playing<\/a> (however, since letters from younger students were written by the school Fathers, perhaps they shouldn\u2019t always be taken at face value). Other students, like Frank Hutton, didn\u2019t enjoy the school very much.
