Chapter 2 How to get there

TEXT

The easiest way to get to Brick Lane is through the London Underground, or as the Brits call it “the tube.”  London is divided into six zones with Zone 1 being the most central, and the Underground charges you depending on what zone you intend to travel.  Brick Lane is in Zone 1.  You may buy a single use ticket, but I suggest that you purchase an Oyster card instead.  The Oyster card is a prepaid card that you can charge with credit and continually top up throughout your journeys.  I find it to be the most convenient way to move throughout the city.  The nearest station to Brick Lane is Aldgate East. Aldgate East is a stop on both the District Line (color coded green on the tube map) and the Hammersmith and City Line (color coded pink).  Upon leaving the tube station, head down Aldgate High St. until you reach Osborn St.  Take a left on Osborn St. and it will eventually turn into Brick Lane.  You will know you have officially arrived when you pass through the ornamental gateway.  The gateway is simply an arch adorned with intricate, twisting ironwork and topped with red, decorative, onion shaped bulbs.
