Source: scu.edu<\/p><\/div>\n<p>University students are pros at writing assignments.\u00a0 We know how to write a ten-page paper over the course of one night without even leaving our dorm room.\u00a0 Thanks to the wide variety of information and digital publications on the Internet, we generally do not even need to venture into the library to find hardcopies of books and articles to research our topics. \u00a0On any given weekday at Santa Clara University, you can find hundreds of students in the library or in their dorm rooms, typing away on their computers determined to finish their papers.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, is this an effective method of writing?\u00a0 To only know our subject through what we look at or read online?\u00a0 Some say that students should actually write in places that challenge their perspectives or let them absorb information and inspiration without staring at the computer screen in front of them.\u00a0 In order to get a better perspective and understanding on the topic at hand, students should write in the \u201cwild.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Professor Olin Bjork\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scu.edu\/cas\/english\/faculty\/bjork.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Olin Bjork<\/a> of Santa Clara University and <a title=\"Professor John Schwartz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aub.edu.lb\/fas\/english\/Pages\/Schwartz.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Professor John Pedro Schwartz<\/a> of the American University of Beirut introduce this idea in their publication <a title=\"&quot;Writing In the Wild&quot; can be found in this academic journal.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hamptonpress.com\/Merchant2\/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&amp;Product_Code=1-57273-780-8\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Writing in the Wild: A Paradigm for Mobile Composition<\/i><\/a>. They argue that with the new accessibility of mobile technology, like smart phones, tablets, laptops, etc., students should take advantage of their resources and write in unconventional places.\u00a0 No more libraries or dorm rooms or coffee shops \u2013 Bjork and Schwartz suggest places where students can interact with the place and people around them.\u00a0 They state, \u201cWe argue that students can better perceive \u2013 and learn to challenge \u2013 their social, cultural, and historical locations when they research, write, and even publish <i>on location<\/i>\u201d (225).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_125\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellbeing.com.au\/article\/Features\/Mind-Health\/Writing-and-healing_1055\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125\" class=\" wp-image-125 \" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/anapecoraro\/files\/2013\/02\/bigstock_Laptop_Outdoors_13.jpg\" width=\"280\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/anapecoraro\/files\/2013\/02\/bigstock_Laptop_Outdoors_13.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/anapecoraro\/files\/2013\/02\/bigstock_Laptop_Outdoors_13-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-125\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taking technology outdoors to new locations besides the conventional library or dorm can help students write with new perspectives and creativity. Source: WellBeing.com.au<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These two authors bring up points in their article, discussing the different forms of technology a student can use, the different mediums through which students can publish, and the different pros and cons of writing in the typical classroom settings or out in the world.\u00a0 They also comment,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSuch assignments reposition writers in the wild, where they must confront material conditions and respond to rhetorical opportunities not often encountered through traditional assignments.\u00a0 This new paradigm offers an alternative to the homework-fieldwork binary that dominates student writing today\u201d (234).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I have to say that I do agree with what they say about taking the writing process outside the conventional academic setting.\u00a0 I am currently sitting in my dorm room right now writing this blog.\u00a0 And now I wonder how my writing would be different if I changed locations, even if I just moved right outside my building and sat on a bench under a tree.\u00a0 How would my interactions with my peers and the environment affect my writing? I think that this idea would inspire new creative thinking and new methods of writing.<\/p>\n<p>When we are writing inside at our regular spot, it sometimes seems like we are stuck in a tunnel \u2013 our thoughts and ideas cannot seem to leave the little box that is our computer. \u00a0However, maybe a new environment would expand our perspectives and creativity.
