{"id":54,"date":"2012-10-14T20:25:20","date_gmt":"2012-10-15T03:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/?p=54"},"modified":"2012-10-14T20:26:43","modified_gmt":"2012-10-15T03:26:43","slug":"youtube","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/2012\/10\/14\/youtube\/","title":{"rendered":"YOUtube"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in 2007, Henry Jenkins wrote \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/henryjenkins.org\/2007\/05\/9_propositions_towards_a_cultu.html\">Nine Propositions Towards a Cultural Theory of YouTube<\/a>\u2019.\u00a0 Only 5 years ago YouTube was established and Jenkins made these 9 ideas of how YouTube will fit into contemporary culture.\u00a0 These ideas included topics such as participatory cultures, spreadability, and social networking emergence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/files\/2012\/10\/henry_headshot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-55\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/files\/2012\/10\/henry_headshot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Henry Jenkins has written 12 books and focuses his efforts on various aspects of media and popular culture. He has his PhD in Communication Arts and is a currently a Professor at USC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Proposition #4<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 YouTube represents a shift away from an era of stickiness (where the goal was to attract and hold spectators on your site, like a roach motel) and towards an era where the highest value is in spreadability\u00a0(a term which emphasizes the active agency of consumers in creating value and heightening awareness through their circulation of media content.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/files\/2012\/10\/YouTube.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/files\/2012\/10\/YouTube.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/files\/2012\/10\/YouTube.jpg 240w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/files\/2012\/10\/YouTube-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\">YouTube<\/a> has become a place where people can create a profile and upload videos for the world to see.\u00a0 Some join the YouTube world to view videos, while others join in hopes to being discovered and jump-start their careers.\u00a0 A handful of famous singers have been found and signed by becoming YouTube stars. For a video to go virtual and spread like a wild fire is that term \u2018spreadability\u2019 that Jenkins was predicting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Gangnam Style<\/p>\n<p>[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0[\/youtube]<\/p>\n<p>Gangnam Style, a song from a Korean rapper named <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psy_(rapper)\">Psy<\/a> was released July 15, 2012.\u00a0 In the 3 months that the song has been uploaded onto YouTube, it has been watched over 464 millions times.\u00a0 Talk about spreadability.\u00a0 In the first day alone it received 500,000 views.\u00a0 This song has been able to touch YouTube, celebrities and millions of other people earning popularity to its catchy beat and signature \u201chorse riding\u201d dance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Call Me Maybe Paraody<\/p>\n<p>[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AsBsBU3vn6M[\/youtube]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.justinbiebermusic.com\/\">Justin Bieber<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/selenagomez.com\/\">Selina Gomez<\/a>, both celebrities and singers, heard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carlyraemusic.com\/#!Twitter\">Carly Rae Jepsen<\/a>\u2019s song \u201cCall Me Maybe\u201d on a mainstream radio station while in Canada.\u00a0 Both went directly to Twitter to spread the song and gain attention she instantly was recognized and signed to Schoolboy Records.
