{"id":112,"date":"2012-12-07T00:33:46","date_gmt":"2012-12-07T08:33:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/?p=112"},"modified":"2012-12-07T00:33:46","modified_gmt":"2012-12-07T08:33:46","slug":"end-poaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/2012\/12\/07\/end-poaching\/","title":{"rendered":"End Poaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For my group Analytical Hypertext we are focusing on tracking\/surveillance\u2026 So, when I came across this article, I was interested because it definitely applies to what we are working on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rebeccaboyle.wordpress.com\/about\/resume\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rebecca Boyle<\/a>, author of this article\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/science\/article\/2012-12\/google-grant-helps-world-wildlife-fund-use-secret-technology-hunt-down-poachers\"><em>Google Funds Secret Techonology For Hunting Down Poachers\u00a0<\/em><\/a>is a freelance journalist from Saint Louis, Missouri.\u00a0 Recently Rebeccas has been covering\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\">NASA<\/a>\u00a0research, biology and engineering for Popular Science (an online new source).<\/p>\n<p>Poaching has been an issue for centuries, but recently it has become quite worse.\u00a0 The poaching industry is worth around $7-10 billion annually.\u00a0 BBC reported that the killing of Rhinos in South Africa have increased from 13 to 588 in the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, Google gave the World Wildlife Fund $5 million for a new grant program.\u00a0 This program, the Global Impact Awards, plans to use technology as an \u201caerial surveillance and radio-frequency ID tags on wild animals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Using tracking devices in order to curb poaching has been used before, but the World Wildlife Fund wanted to increase the umbrella of monitoring technology.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0\u201cThis is an industry that is creating crisis.\u00a0 It is emptying the world\u2019s forests and oceans\u201d the WWF said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_114\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/files\/2012\/12\/4593_image_Poaching_Final__headline_052120122.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-114\" style=\"color: #444444;font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;line-height: 1.5;border-style: none;border-color: initial;cursor: default;height: auto;border-width: 0px;padding: 0px;margin: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/files\/2012\/12\/4593_image_Poaching_Final__headline_052120122-259x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/files\/2012\/12\/4593_image_Poaching_Final__headline_052120122-259x300.jpg 259w, https:\/\/blogs.scu.edu\/ajepsen\/files\/2012\/12\/4593_image_Poaching_Final__headline_052120122.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stop Poaching. Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awf.org\/files\/4593_image_Poaching_Final__headline_05212012.jpg\">African Wildlife Foundation<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>I feel that this is a type of tracking and surveillance that will benefit the world.\u00a0 People\u00a0might argue that the WWF is ruining the natural environment that the Rhinos and the Elephants are living in, but I would disagree.\u00a0 The WWF focuses their time and energy to keeping these animals safe.\u00a0 The last thing that anyone would ever want is to see these animals extinct, except the poachers themselves.<\/p>\n<p>By adding these tracking and surveillance devices, it would be able to detect poachers and dispatch mobile ranger patrols to catch them.\u00a0 They would also place sensors on animals and in their environments that could be detected by a network.<\/p>\n<p>I enjoy reading articles like this.\u00a0 I also enjoy seeing Google put their money in a good place.\u00a0 This subject will be worth taking a look at in a year or so and see how the numbers compare to now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For my group Analytical Hypertext we are focusing on tracking\/surveillance\u2026 So, when I came across this article, I was interested because it definitely applies to what we are working on.
