Being a college student and surrounded by the party culture on campus, it is very difficult to restrain being part of these types of scenes especially since entering college one has unspoken freedom from any parental control. The hookup culture is very common on college campuses so there is always high risk of dangers including STD and unplanned pregnancy. If there is high rates of STD infection and unplanned pregnancies accounting for all college students where condoms and contraception options are available in their health care center at school, imagine a campus where they absolutely ban and disapprove providing any sort of protection against any of these dangers for their students.
Catholic universities and colleges uphold their religious values that refer to those values set by the Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic Church itself has never approved of artificial contraception such as condoms, birth control pills, etc. therefore Catholic Universities and colleges also do not approve in providing those options to their students directly on campus. Well unfortunately, there are several Catholic Universities and colleges nation wide that fall under that category and I am part of one.
Santa Clara University is a Jesuit and Catholic University that follows strictly the Roman Catholic Church beliefs and has and will not provide contraception to its students regardless of the student’s religious affiliation. Obama’s recent Obama Care Health Care Proposal is forcing everyone who provides healthcare to their employees or students to provide contraceptive care & services, with the exception of religious affiliation institutions such as Catholic churches or institutions. There is a loophole however, Catholic Universities are the exception to the exception because they have students who are not Catholic and thus they should be provided with the new Obama Health Care Plan.
Yet, Catholic Universities and colleges are fighting back and do not want to impose providing contraceptive services on their campus. Santa Clara University will not stand for it either, yet us students who are asking for these services because we have no other access to them are in favor of Obama’s health care plan. There has to be a solution that can meet both the students needs and the university’s catholic beliefs.
